Update As of 4 March, 2025:

The PlayStation 2 is now officially 25 years old. Two years since its 23rd anniversary, the console faces the threat of the Nintendo Switch as the latter quickly catches up in terms of sales. Despite the impending threat, Sony’s second attempt at gaming hardware remains an undeniable marvel for the entire industry.

The PlayStation 2 is still the industry’s best-selling piece of hardware, and even if it ends up being dethroned eventually, it will continue to stand as arguably the most influential gaming console to have ever launched.

Original Story:

Sony’s PlayStation started its legendary journey 28 years ago on December 9, 1994. The PlayStation consoles have performed remarkably well and have been loved by fans from all around the world.

The PlayStation 1 was a massive success for Sony. Still, it was just the beginning, as the next entry in the PlayStation franchise — the PlayStation 2 became the most popular console ever, performing incredibly well and setting enormous records.

Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the greatest console of all time, the PlayStation 2; it was released on March 4, 2000.

The PlayStation 2’s path has been extraordinary since it has accomplished so much and has sold more than 155 million units globally, which makes it the best-selling console of all time.

This is all thanks to the abundance of features the PlayStation 2 provided. It offered DVD Playback, a significant visual improvement over its predecessor and other consoles. It was the birthplace of world-famous franchises like the God of War, Ratchet, and Clank.
