- The creator of the Witcher series, Andrzej Sapkowski, is not involved in The Witcher 4 development in any way.
- However, he approves of the work that the dev team is doing and trusts them greatly with the Witcher universe.
- CDPR still meets with him from time to time to discuss things as he’s hands-off from the upcoming project.
Despite a strong lineup during the TGA 2024 event, The Witcher 4 arguably stole most of the spotlight with its new reveal trailer. However, not everyone was happy with the revelation that Ciri is now the protagonist moving forward.
Now, CDPR has revealed that the creator of the original book series, Andrzej Sapkowski, is not involved with The Witcher 4 in any way. But the studio has a great relationship with him.
Why it matters: The creator of the book series, Andrzej Sapkowski, not being involved with The Witcher 4 means that whatever CDPR makes of the RPG will be entirely their responsibility.
In an interview with Eurogamer, The Witcher 4 director Sebastian Kalemba clarified that Andrzej has had a hands-off approach to the project. The creator has great trust with the developer team when it comes to dealing with The Witcher story.
You know, he’s not [involved] in the form of a consultant or whatever, but we have a great relationship with him. So we meet with Andrzej Sapkowski from time to time, discuss things.
CDPR says it can perfectly reimagine the original series in a respectful and fun manner. The Witcher 4 narrative director, Philipp Weber, also defended Ciri being a protagonist by claiming Geralt called her a Witcher in the books too.
All in all, no release date or window has been confirmed for the game, as it is quite early in its development. However, it is expected to launch on PC and consoles—while possibly skipping Series S because of hardware limitations.
Do you think Geralt’s removal as the protagonist from The Witcher 4 will pay off, or would it lead to another post-launch disaster? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
