Marathon Playtest Impressions Reportedly Positive; $40 Price Being Considered

Another Concord Situation In The Making?

Story Highlight
  • Marathon is said to be an extraction shooter that offers a similar experience to Escape From Tarkov.
  • PlayStation and Bungie are considering a $40 price tag for this title.
  • The game is said to focus on class-based gameplay rather than specific heroes.

PlayStation’s live-service efforts have raised eyebrows after Concord’s recent failure. Bungie hasn’t been doing too well either, creating doubts about PlayStation’s future in the ever-evolving GAAS(games-as-a-service) landscape.

This studio is currently working on Marathon in addition to supporting Destiny 2. While it was previously said that this title’s development wasn’t going well, recent reports appear to be much more encouraging.

Why it matters: PlayStation purchased this developer specifically to excel in the live-service market. However, the team has not lived up to the gaming giant’s expectations.

As reported by TheGamepost, Bungie’s upcoming shooter will aim for an Escape From Tarkov-like experience.

The studio seems to have two playable maps for the time being, and even though the team’s morale is low, playtesters have been pleasantly surprised by the experience.

This is encouraging, but the developer seems to be contemplating a $40 launch price. This would position Marathon as yet another premium live-service title similar to Helldivers 2 and Concord.

Since this market is dominated by free-to-play offerings, this price tag could be a major risk. With games like Arena: Breakout Infinite promising a similar extraction shooter experience at no additional cost, Marathon could find it difficult to break into the market.

Bungie Announced Its Latest Project Last Year

The final piece of information in the report suggests that Bungie is sticking to a class-based approach. Unlike Concord, Marathon won’t offer heroes with specific abilities, even though this has been alluded to in the past.

The most interesting part of this report is the $40 price tag. PlayStation could still reverse this decision, especially since Destiny 2 is currently free to play, so it will be interesting to see how the gaming giant’s plans evolve.
