Japanese Fandom Is Still Furious!

Story Highlight
  • AC Shadows dev Ubisoft has confirmed in an interview that it is working with experts on the controversial game.
  • It has adopted the help of world-renowned experts to respect Japanese culture and avoid offending anyone.
  • The entry is set to come out on November 15, 2024, for PC, macOS, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

AC Shadows has been in hot waters ever since info about it started coming out. Despite much anticipation, a good chunk of the community was also disappointed at controversial decisions. Ubisoft previously apologized to the offended group; now it appears to have taken actual steps to mitigate the issues.

The devs have recently confirmed in an interview that they are working with “world-renowned experts” to develop Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This decision will ensure that Ubisoft will stay accurate to the history of feudal Japan—albeit with many “creative decisions,” as you’d expect in an AC game.

Why it matters: The decision to consult experts in Japanese culture suggests that Ubisoft is trying to develop AC Shadows by making the most appropriate choices. After much controversy, the developers are trying their best to respect Japanese culture.

Assassin's Creed Shadows
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will take place during the ancient feudal Japan.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Ubisoft’s art director Thierry Dansereau clarifies that offending anyone has not been their goal. Rather, with the help of experts, a lot of attention has been paid to staying as respectful of Japanese culture as possible.

“We’ve worked with a lot of experts, to just understand well the time period.”

While a plethora of gamers are excited to get their hands on AC Shadows, the wider community sentiment still appears to be negative, as clarified by a popular analyst in the past.

Assassin's Creed Shadows
One of AC Shadows’ main protagonists, Yasuke, has caused much controversy because of his samurai portrayal.

Most of the controversy began because Yasuke was dubbed as a samurai in the upcoming title, which many historians have disagreed with over the years. Another group argues that a black foreigner has been chosen as a protagonist for the sake of diversity.

For those not in the know, AC Shadows is slated to drop on November 15, 2024, for PC, macOS, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
