Activision Cancelled Crash For Live Service Focus!

Story Highlight
  • The Crash Bandicoot franchise has been one of Activision’s most popular franchises.
  • However, a brand new entry in the series was cancelled due to Crash 4’s performance being below expectations.
  • New information has revealed that this game could have been a crossover with Spyro.

Crash Bandicoot has remained a popular Activision franchise since its debut on the PlayStation in 1996 and has garnered a massive fanbase. While the series has enjoyed significant success over the years, the developers were reportedly dissatisfied with the performance of Crash Bandicoot 4.

This disappointment led to the cancellation of the highly anticipated Crash Bandicoot 5. Moreover, new information has surfaced online regarding the cancelled Crash Bandicoot 5.

Why it matters: Activision’s high standards have reached a point where even selling millions of units isn’t enough to justify continuing a franchise, showing just how high the expectations have become within the company.

This information comes from an in-depth video by YouTuber DidYouKnowGaming, who delved into the proposed Crash and Spyro crossover project and the issues with Crash Team Rumble, sharing insights from developers.

According to the video, Crash Bandicoot 5 was set to feature both Crash and Spyro as playable characters. Unfortunately, the game was cancelled because Crash Bandicoot 4 did not meet Activision’s expectations despite selling over 5 million units.

According to the video, the game had two concepts before its cancellation. The first would have revisited the Academy of Evil from Crash Twinsanity, and the second would have been a crossover with Spyro the Dragon.

In the crossover concept, Uka Uka would have been the main antagonist, and both Crash and Spyro would team up as playable characters. This crossover would feature team-up moves, such as Crash riding Spyro, blending their unique abilities.

While this all sounds spectacular, and this crossover was potentially what could have been Crash Bandicoot 5, it seems that it won’t be a reality anytime soon.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Sold 500K Units In A Day

Despite selling over 5 million units, Crash Bandicoot 4’s success wasn’t enough to satisfy Activision, leading to the cancellation of Crash Bandicoot 5 in favor of focusing on highly successful GAAS (Games as a Service) titles like Call of Duty.

While it’s unfortunate that this highly anticipated game was scrapped, especially considering how fascinating it sounded, we hope the concept isn’t entirely shelved. We still hope that this crossover idea becomes a reality in the future.
