Also #6 Globally Despite The Controversy!

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows has become quite controversial, with Japanese audiences being vocal about its problems.
  • Despite the outrage, the game is currently Amazon’s most pre-ordered PS5 title in Japan.
  • Globally, it took the 6th spot, highlighting that the controversy seems to have had little impact.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has already become one of the most controversial games of 2024. This year had no shortage of such releases, with the likes of Palworld, Stellar Blade, and more becoming controversial for various reasons.

The game has received much criticism, with many calling it woke and others leaving dislikes on the YouTube trailer. Despite the supposed outrage, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has already become a huge hit on Amazon.

Why it matters: Ubisoft’s choice for its main protagonist was not the most obvious one, but it seems fans are willing to give this release a shot despite the outrage on social media and online forums.

Over on Amazon, the game is currently at the top spot among PS5 games in the Japanese region and is being sold for 15K Yen. That is almost $100 for the standard edition.

It should be noted that the standard edition is in first place, and the Gold Edition is in 8th place, costing 27K Yen. This is surprising since Japanese fans were the most vocal about disliking Ubisoft’s take on this region.

The number of pre-orders suggests that most fans are excited to play the game and don’t mind Yasuke as a protagonist.

Meanwhile, the title is doing great in other parts of the world. The gold edition of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is currently Amazon’s 6th best-selling global PS5 game, while the standard edition is also within the top 10.

The Amazon rankings line up with past reports that suggested Ubisoft was quite happy with the pre-orders.

It seems the publisher’s first venture into Japan will be quite massive, making it worth the wait. If the game performs well enough, Ubisoft may even release multiple entries in Japan since this is something the team has done in the past.
