Dragon’s Dogma 2 Lost 80% of Its Steam Players Within A Month

Capcom's RPG Unable To Sustain Launch Momentum!

Story Highlight
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2 was released less than a month ago.
  • The game became a major Steam release for Capcom, but players seem to be moving away from the RPG already.
  • The RPG has lost around 80% of its player base on the platform.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 was released just three weeks ago, and the game had a great start, becoming Capcom’s biggest launch on Steam after selling over 2.5 million copies in less than two weeks.

While the title was criticized for its microtransactions, these problems were overshadowed by the launch excitement. However, nearly one month later, it seems the RPG has been unable to sustain this excitement.

Compared to its highest figures on Steam, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has already lost 80% of its players.

Why it matters: The game was launched with performance issues on PC, which could be one reason why players are already moving on from the title.

As seen in the above screenshot, 43K players are currently active in the RPG. This is still a strong figure but is not comparable to the peak concurrent player count of over 228K Steam users.

While single-player games typically lose players over time, Capcom’s latest title launched as one of this year’s biggest RPGs. Many of last year’s biggest releases were able to sustain higher player counts for far longer.

In comparison, Capcom’s offering seems to be falling behind. It is also important to note that the current player count was recorded during the weekend when more players were active.

Until last week, Dragon’s Dogma 2 was still hitting 70-80K concurrent players. It seems player counts have been cut in half since then, with further drops expected as it reaches the one-month mark in just over a week.

Dragon’s Dogma Is A Decade Old Franchise

As stated earlier, famous games like Palworld, Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, and more have gone through similar drops before. Therefore, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is by no means an exception.

However, it fails to match games like Baldur’s Gate 3, which consistently achieved high player counts for months after launch.

Capcom is currently considering DLC content for the RPG. Additionally, future discounts could help bring these player counts up again. Therefore, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is still going strong, even if its player counts are going down faster than initially expected.
