PS5 PRO Can't Come Soon Enough!

Story Highlight
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2 will feature an uncapped frame rate, but it runs around 30FPS.
  • The latest preview build averaged 31FPS.
  • Capcom states that the PC platform will offer higher frame rates.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has received another wave of previews ahead of its release on March 22. Like past previews, the reactions have been encouraging, promising all the RPG goodness the series is known for.

However, those hoping to play the RPG at 60FPS might find themselves disappointed. While rumors and reports about the frame rate have been all over the place, director Hideaki Itsuno confirms that Capcom aimed for an average of 30FPS.

Why it matters: A lot has been said about the capabilities of current-gen consoles handling 60FPS in new titles, and it seems the cracks are beginning to show up.

Reports about a 30FPS cap for Dragon’s Dogma 2 began to show up two months ago. While not entirely accurate, it seems these rumors were closer to the truth than initially expected.

According to IGN, Capcom’s latest build ran at an average of 31FPS. However, intense moments would see this frame rate dropping as low as 24FPS. IGN noted that this was not the game’s final version, and the preview did not allow testing of VRR options or a different PS5 base resolution.

These could improve performance in the future, but a statement from Hideaki Itsuno hints that this was Capcom’s target from the beginning. When asked about the performance, he confirmed that consoles are meant to hover close to 30FPS.

He clarified that the PC platform will benefit from higher frame rates. However, Capcom’s decision to avoid a 30FPS cap is odd, to say the least. With an average of 31FPS, it is unlikely to run above 40FPS very often, if at all.

In this instance, an optional 30FPS cap might be needed for a stable experience at release. It is also speculated that this uncapped mode was left in place to later take advantage of the PS5 Pro, expected to arrive in late 2024.

Nonetheless, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is now considered an early Game of The Year contender. Regardless of the frame rate, its core systems and RPG elements promise to fill a gap left by the likes of Elden Ring.

Many believe Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a must-play release for fans of expansive RPGs with endless amounts of content.
