Next-generation Arc Battlemage Xe2 GPUs are reportedly being developed by Intel’s engineering team, while a preview of the next-generation Celestial Xe3 GPUs was shown at CES 2024.
With the GPU engineering team leaving the current Arc Alchemist Xe GPU architecture behind, Intel hinted that work is currently being done on its next-generation Arc Battlemage Xe2 GPU architecture.
The information was obtained during an on-site interview at CES 2024 with PCWorld, featuring former Nvidia executive Tom Peterson. According to Intel’s Tom Petersen, Battlemage is operational in Intel’s labs and is now being developed on the software front.
Petersen states:
“Roughly 30% of our engineers are working on Battlemage.”
He pointed out that most of the work on Battlemage is being done on the software end. This will be crucial since Intel’s first-generation graphics cards, while impressive, fell behind the competition in terms of drivers and game compatibility.
Tom Peterson also confirmed that the hardware team is focused on Celestial, the next series of graphics cards from Intel.
With so many months until its release, making predictions about Battlemage graphics performance is purely hypothetical. However, advanced machine learning features, enhanced ray tracing, etc, are all to be expected.
According to Intel, its high-end products are aimed at the enthusiast market this time around. However, Nvidia and AMD will undoubtedly introduce their own next-generation rivals to the competition.
Still, it should not be hard for Intel to aim for performance similar to current high-end cards like the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and GeForce RTX 4080.
Following Battlemage, the Xe3 architecture is expected to debut with the Panther Lake CPU series later on. The former should debut alongside Lunar Lake, which is now formally scheduled for release in 2024.
