APUs Are Improving Rapidly!

Details on the upcoming AMD Ryzen 8000G APU lineup were discovered last year. Although detailed specifications regarding the lineup were unknown at the time, further details have now emerged that demonstrate the capabilities of these chips.

AMD Ryzen 5 8600G Hawk Point benchmarks are now available online, helping us predict how this new APU series will turn out in terms of performance. The Ryzen 5 8600G APU has made its first appearance on Geekbench, demonstrating its performance in a list of two tests.

Scoring 30,770 points in the Vulkan benchmark and 24,842 points in the OpenCL test, this APU rivals the GeForce GTX 1060.

The Ryzen 5 8600G is positioned precisely in the center of AMD’s 8000 APU lineup.

Featuring 8 RDNA 3 compute units with an operating frequency of 2.8GHz and six Zen 4 cores with a base/boost speed of 4.35GHz/5GHz, the APU has a lot of potential for budget gaming.

It’s also interesting to note that AMD has changed the naming scheme for the RDNA 3 desktop APU, now known as Radeon 5, instead of Radeon 760M. Furthermore, the Radeon 5 runs 200Mhz higher and is on par with the performance of 780M found on the 7940HS/8945HS mobile chips.

The upcoming Ryzen 5 8600G offers a hefty boost in frequency over its predecessor. These upgrades translate to potential performance on par with the GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card from seven years ago.

In terms of raw gaming performance based on Geekbench scores, the Ryzen 5 8600G has a score above the 7-year-old GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. Still, real-world performance may not be similar due to bandwidth limitations.

With the current rise of handheld gaming, rapid improvements in APU technology have become quite common. Valve recently released the Steam Deck OLED, still utilizing the RDNA 2 graphics from AMD’s last-generation architecture.

The company claims it needs to see substantial improvements before releasing a new generation of this handheld, so these RDNA 3 iGPU results are quite promising for this segment of the gaming industry.

While the GTX 1060 is no longer the force it used to be, slightly more graphical power in a portable form factor would be quite appealing for fans of handheld gaming.
