- Sony dominates Chinese console gaming, capturing nearly 70% of the market.
- The Chinese console market grew rapidly this year compared to 2022.
- While Nintendo is very popular in the region, PlayStation dominated its rivals comfortably.
PlayStation has been unstoppable this year. With an average of 40K PS5 consoles reportedly sold each day, it has far outpaced the competition, finally achieving 50 million sales this year.
While the PS5 is dominating the competition in parts of the world like the UK, Japan, and the US, it seems China is equally fond of the consoles. According to a report, over 2/3 of the market is dominated by PlayStation in this region.
Why it matters: China is one of the biggest markets in the video gaming industry, so this lead is a massive advantage for Sony over the competition.

PlayStation remains unrivaled in China, reaching over 66.1% of the console gaming market share. On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch boasted impressive numbers of its own, reaching 56.3% share for a single device.
2023 was massive for consoles in the region, as the recent report suggests that the global console game market was worth 335.46 billion yuan ( $47.18 billion) last year, an increase of 11% compared to 2022.
The report has also highlighted that 28.6 million consoles were sold in 2023 during the first three quarters, which was a 20% year-on-year increase. Therefore, it is safe to assume that consoles had a great year in China.
What makes the result so impressive is the fact that Chinese gamers are mainly focused on platforms like PC and mobile, and many of the top-played Chinese games are not part of consoles.
Still, this segment of the gaming industry is growing rapidly.
In addition to its success in China, the console sold over 22.5 million units worldwide this year, helping it break past the 50 million milestone. Overall, PlayStation continued to be the biggest console force in many parts of the world.
In terms of software, games like Spider-Man 2 created new records for PlayStation games, while a popular title like God of War Ragnarok reached 15 million sales before the end of 2023.
Though 2023 was already phenomenal for Sony, 2024 also appears to be stacked with multiple exclusive titles that will help the gaming giant reach new milestones and dominate such markets again.
