Nvidia is reportedly working on an entirely new version of GeForce RTX 4090 that will be sold in China. This new version of GeForce RTX 4090 will be made specially to cater to the U.S. export controls while allowing Chinese customer to get their hands on this flagship GPU.
In order to avoid the current laws, rumors have it that this GeForce RTX 4090 variant will have a “D” at the end, which is said to indicate “Dragon” (2024 is, after all, the Year of the Dragon).
It should also have a total processing performance of less than 4,800 points.
The source claims that Nvidia is planning to price the GeForce RTX 4090 Dragon at $1599 or 12,999.
This is identical to the MSRP of the original graphics card at launch. However, considering the current price of the GPU in China, Nvidia might sell it for a lot more.
Currently, the fear of impending shortages of GeForce RTX 4090 in China has caused a sharp increase in the price of the graphics card. Chinese firms are adopting the same chips and turning them into AI solutions because the current supply of Nvidia’s flagship GPU has grown so expensive to obtain.
The GeForce RTX 4090 Dragon will be less powerful than the complete GeForce RTX 4090 in terms of gaming performance and AI capabilities. However, it will have the same features, like DLSS, Frame Generation, ray tracing, and Reflex, found in other GeForce RTX 40 series cards, but with limited computational capacity to comply with US sanctions.
According to industry expert Patrick Moorhead, Nvidia is presently developing new AI GPUs that will be allowed for sale in China. The chart above shows the performance threshold the GPUs must meet to be exported from the United States.
On the other hand, AMD also plans to launch AI-focused GPUs of its own to cater to the new market in China. With Nvidia reportedly selling half a million H100 GPUs recently, the worldwide market is still open to more competitors.
However, only time will tell which of the two giants will be able to dominate the Chinese AI market in the future.
