- The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was announced yesterday.
- This announcement was met with negativity due to the incremental improvements over the original PS4 game.
- A source claims that this project was handled by new Naughty Dog hires, and Neil Druckmann was not involved in the remaster.
After months of rumors, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was recently announced for PS5 with a release date of January 19.
The early reception from the fans has not been positive, as the announcement video on YouTube has seen nearly 100k dislikes in less than a day. A major concern of fans is the fact that these projects are distracting Naughty Dog from new games.
However, one insider has claimed that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was a side project done by new hires at the studio.
Why it matters: Naughty Dog has put out various games since 2020. However, none of these games was a brand new title, with the studio creating remasters and remakes.
From what I was told from one person, this was more of a project for new hires to get them in the game. Druckman’s team is full steam ahead on an original. One doesn’t takeaway from the other afaik

Following the game’s official announcement, a user took to Twitter stating that Sony should let Naughty Dog work on new games instead of forcing them toward re-releases. In replying to this comment, Jordan Middler from VGC wrote:
“This was more of a project for new hires to get them in the game.”
He further stated that Neil Druckmann and his team are busy working on a new title. While this information has not been confirmed, it makes sense, given the limited number of enhancements in the remaster.
In September, Neil Druckmann was asked whether his next project would be The Last of Us Part 3, but he refused to comment on it. Therefore, it remains to be seen if a follow-up to The Last of Us Part 2 is in the works.
While Neil Druckmann did not say anything about The Last of Us Part 3, a popular leaker certainly seems to think the game is in development.
Because new developers have worked on the recently announced remaster, side-by-side comparisons show that it looks similar to the existing PS4 version.
Still, this could benefit future Naughty Dog projects. The studio is known for creating technologically advanced games. Therefore, each developer needs to be proficient with its game engine and technology.
With the remaster’s release right around the corner, we hope to learn more about Naughty Dog’s next AAA project soon. Since The Last of Us Part 2 will be four years old next year, more information could be revealed in 2024.
