The beginning of Titanfall marked a new era of first-person shooter games. With a sci-fi setting, focus on snappy movement with boosters, and massive Titans, Respawn Entertainment immediately attracted millions of gamers in 2014.
Three years later, the studio followed up with Titanfall 2, a game considered one of the most underrated in the first-person shooter genre. Today, this release celebrates its 7th anniversary.
Why it matters: Titanfall was left with untapped potential after Respawn Entertainment moved on to focus on Apex Legends.
Titanfall 2 became massive in no time, with a score of 89/100 on Metacritic.
After backlash from the first game, Respawn Entertainment added a single-player campaign to Titanfall 2. This campaign told a memorable story about pilot Jack Cooper and the titan BT.
Respawn Entertainment’s excellent storytelling abilities and level design shined throughout the short but satisfying story. The developer also implemented a unique time travel mechanic in certain sections, allowing players to immediately hop between different time periods of certain levels.
Over on the multiplayer side of things, the studio introduced more titans and streamlined the game’s core movement. Building on these excellent foundations resulted in one of the best movement shooters to date.
Introductions like a grappling hook also ensured getting from place to place was more fluid and enjoyable. Unfortunately, Titanfall 2 was overshadowed due to its release between Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, two first-person shooter juggernauts.
We believe that the game offers an exciting FPS experience to date and has everything that the first game lacks. It introduced a single-player campaign and evolved the multiplayer gameplay, addressing the feedback from the 2014 release.
Therefore, Titanfall 2 was a fantastic sequel that did not get the love it deserved.
While Respawn Entertainment has ignored the game after Apex Legends became a massive battle royal, the studio recently dropped a huge update, leading to a resurgence for the game. The developers have also potentially teased Titanfall 3 recently, but nothing has been officially confirmed.
Nonetheless, we believe Titanfall 2 is still worth revisiting today. If you have never played it before, now might be the best time since it is currently selling at an 85% discount on Steam.
