Counter-Strike 2 Skipping macOS Support Due To Lack of Players

Not Enough Players On The Platform!

Apple has recently made a major push in the gaming industry. It believes the iPhone 15 can be a major force in the industry, with the phone supporting games like Resident Evil Village and Assassin’s Creed Mirage. However, Valve is pulling Counter-Strike 2 support for macOS.

The Apple CS community was able to play CS:GO on the platform, but unfortunately, the ecosystem will not be able to run the latest version of the FPS franchise.

Why it matters: CS:GO was the most popular game on Steam, and Counter-Strike 2 is expected to continue its legacy.

Valve confirms macOS will not be supported for the game, mainly due to the fact that the number of macOS users is insufficient for Valve to invest in a port and long-term support.

Even though Apple sells millions of Macs every year, the combined player base for CS:GO on macOS, 32-bit operating systems, and DirectX 9 systems was less than 1% of the total population.

Therefore, the studio made the decision to drop support for all of these platforms. Valve decided it would be expensive to support macOS and continue to provide timely updates since the lack of players would make it pointless as an investment.

The Steam Support FAQ confirms macOS users who had prime status active will be eligible for a refund if most of their playtime was on the platform and if they played it between the Counter-Strike 2 limited test.

This refund offer will expire on 1 December, but macOS users can still enjoy a legacy version of CS:GO. Valve confirms this version supports all features of the iconic FPS game except official matchmaking. Unfortunately, support for this version will be discontinued in January 2024.
