Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Hints At More Anime Adaptations For Future

"A lot is Planned!"

Cyberpunk 2077 has cemented its legacy as an iconic redemption story in the gaming industry. However, before the 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty breathed new life into the RPG, it had already begun to see a resurgence last year.

This was thanks to Cyberpunk Edgerunners, a well-produced anime from Studio Trigger. Following this adaptation’s success, CDPR has recently expressed interest in pursuing further collaborations with Japanese animation studios.

Why it matters: Many studios have begun to pursue anime-style adaptations for their properties after recent success. The latest announcements include adaptations of Tomb Raider and Devil May Cry, motivating CDPR to explore the medium further.

Following an investor presentation, CDPR was asked about further plans to pursue an adaptation like Cyberpunk Edgerunners since the anime played a major role in the game’s resurgence last year.

CDPR’s CCO, Michal Nowakowski, affirmed that plans were in motion and pointed to the recent announcement of a live-action adaptation for the game. He highlighted that work on Cyberpunk Edgerunners began as early as 2018.

However, the announcement was not made until much later. Michal Nowakowski said:

“A lot is planned. There are plans we’d rather keep quiet until there is something to discuss.”

CDPR’s Chief Creative Officer then pointed to the team’s partner, Studio Trigger. He stated:

“Trigger has certain rules for announcing projects and we have to comply with this.”

Therefore, the team appears to have dropped a subtle hint at another upcoming collaboration with Studio Trigger.

The animation studio is among the most influential in the anime industry, making it an obvious choice for CDPR to work on another project with Studio Trigger. However, an interview from 2022 hinted that this supposed project is unlikely to be related to Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

Last year, Satoru Honma stated that Cyberpunk Edgerunners was created as a standalone project, and another season was not planned. However, plans could have changed since then.

We believe further anime adaptations will benefit CDPR and the current revolution of gaming adaptations. The anime medium inherently comes with a lot of flexibility and freedom, allowing studios to express themselves in a way unique to the medium.

Therefore, any of CDPR’s IPs, The Witcher or Cyberpunk 2077, would likely prove to be a good fit for an anime under the right leadership.

In addition to expanding the IP, CDPR has begun early work on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. However, the game is several years away, with the team still deciding if the next game will retain the first-person perspective from Cyberpunk 2077.
