PlayStation is no stranger to first-person shooters. While the gaming giant may be more famous for its third-person action-adventure offerings, the PlayStation 3 generation had several first-party shooters from the company.
The most popular first-person shooter IP, Call of Duty, is currently available on PlayStation, but Microsoft may soon own the franchise if the Activision merger is approved. Microsoft has also claimed a decade is enough for Sony to develop a Call of Duty rival.
This has led to a recent discussion about a potential revival of legacy PlayStation IPs for this purpose. A poll from Reset Era appears to hint that fans can see Resistance from Insomniac Games as serious competition.
Unlike recent Call of Duty games, Resistance took place in an alternate history setting. This meant that the games featured aliens and futuristic weapons. A multiplayer component was also included, including both co-op and PVP modes.
The franchise had a lot to offer with its dark setting, large-scale battles, and solid shooting mechanics. However, it focused more on the single-player elements than a game like Call of Duty.
Resistance saw its final entry in 2011 and has not been revisited since then. The developer behind the games, Insomniac Games, is also unlikely to return. Since 2018, the studio has found incredible success with Marvel’s Spider-Man, and it is currently busy with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine.
As such, PlayStation would need to find a different developer to revive the franchise. It can also be said that none of the three games was able to measure up to Call of Duty’s popularity back in the day.
A similar statement can be made for Killzone, another first-person shooter IP from PlayStation. Looking at the poll, Killzone has its fair share of fans even today, and a new entry might be well received.
The last Killzone game was released on the PS4 in 2013 and served as one of the few games that showed the potential of the new hardware at launch.
While Microsoft has always had an iconic first-person shooter IP with Halo, PlayStation has not yet found its footing in the genre. Despite countless tries, none of PlayStation’s FPS games have left a significant mark on the industry.
However, this could change if the Activision acquisition succeeds. This merger would incentivize Sony to break into the genre, possibly through revisiting older IPs like Resistance.
