"Black Myth: Wukong's Success Is Still Shocking"

Story Highlight
  • Black Myth: Wukong continues to receive praise from veteran developers in the industry.
  • Konami’s Noriaki Okamura praised Game Science for releasing a Game of The Year contender despite its lack of experience.
  • He also compared the title’s success to Genshin Impact, praising it as a major moment for the Chinese gaming industry.

Black Myth: Wukong’s success story is no secret. This AAA success has put the Chinese gaming industry on the map, setting the stage for major investments and various future projects.

Game Science also secured multiple Game of The Year nominations and broke Steam’s concurrent records this year. Following these results, a major Konami developer has dubbed Black Myth: Wukong 2024’s most shocking release.

Why it matters: The fact that veteran developers have been just as impressed by this AAA release as general audiences shows how well Game Science’s work holds up.

Black Myth: Wukong
Sun Wukong Is Now Highly Popular In The Industry

Senior Producer Noriaki Okamura was recently asked to share his most shocking game of 2024 as part of 4Gamer’s annual developer interview.

He was quick to point out Black Myth: Wukong as his pick, highlighting the fact that Game Science delivered AAA gameplay without any prior experience. The Producer also acknowledged the title’s Game of The Year nomination.

According to his statement, Black Myth: Wukong’s success is similar to that of Genshin Impact’s. Both titles showcase the prowess of Chinese developers and stand out as one-of-a-kind experiences from a region otherwise not known for its games.

It’s still shocking that a production company with no past experience suddenly became a Game of The Year candidate.

-Noriaki Okamura

The most interesting part of this interview is the fact that Noriaki Okamura was far from the only one to select Black Myth: Wukong as his most shocking game of 2024. Developers from studios like Koei Tecmo and Cygames had a similar response.

Going by these responses, it’s clear that Sun Wukong’s impact on the industry has been surreal in 2024. Moving forward, Game Science is expected to return with DLC for the title and various sequels to expand the IP.

As for Konami, the gaming giant is currently focused on Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake. Producer Noriaki Okamura promised this title would be his top priority heading into 2025.
