Xbox Series S|X Have Been Huge Letdown!

Story Highlight
  • Xbox just sold 2.7 million consoles this year in the US compared to last year’s 3.8 million.
  • This has led to the company recording its worst console sales ever in 2024.
  • Xbox has shifted its attention more towards publishing rather than hardware.

It is no surprise that Xbox is in a state of crisis with its hardware market. The Series X and S haven’t sold even close to what Microsoft might have expected, and new data shows that Xbox recorded its worst yearly console sales ever in 2024.

The new Xbox never really took off, and Microsoft even admitted to losing the console wars a couple of years ago. Since then, the sales have declined even further despite putting Activision Blizzard titles on Game Pass.

Why it matters: As Xbox sales dip, Microsoft has taken a different route. It is now focusing more on publishing that hardware, but it still has plans for a next-gen Xbox in 2026.

According to a video from Welfare that compiled data from Circana, Xbox hardware saw such a massive decline last year that it registered its worst-ever US sales in 2024. It managed to sell just 2.7 million units compared to 3.8 million in 2023.

In contrast, the PS5 recorded over 4 million sales, leading to over 70 million lifetime units sold, making it the best-selling console of the year. The sales even overtook those of PS4 in the US, compared to the same time frame.

These results were anticipated, considering Xbox hasn’t left much of a reason to buy its consoles. For the longest time, all Xbox games have launched on PC and Game Pass on day one, and even PS5 will get games like Doom, Halo, and more.

PlayStation Xbox Market
PlayStation continued to dominate the market share in 2024.

This makes it interesting to see the direction Xbox is headed in the future. Based on the rumored next-gen console, it isn’t giving up on hardware just yet; however, the sales will yet again be a huge question mark.
