  • The console wars are now over, and the years of direct competition are done.

The current state of the Xbox is quite interesting; while its hardware sales are at their worst in years, it has transitioned into a complete multiplatform publisher. Even former industry personalities now claim that this move was essential for the company.

Former Nintendo of America boss says Xbox needs support from PlayStation and Nintendo if it wants a bright future. It is the only way the company can reach a wider audience amid falling hardware sales.

Why it matters: Xbox hardware has totally lost it this generation, leading to the end of the console wars. As software is a primary revenue driver, going multiplatform was a logical step for the company.

Former Nintendo boss says Xbox’s future in the industry depends on PlayStation and Nintendo

Talking to The Game Business, Reggie Fils-Aimé shared his thoughts on what’s going on at Xbox. He said the years of direct competition are done, and Xbox is now a third-party publisher that also makes some hardware.

Xbox needs support from Sony for Microsoft’s software to reach the largest audience, and it would be in their best interest to find ways to make its way onto the Nintendo platform.

He said that support from Sony and Nintendo is essential if it wants to reach a larger audience, and it is doing just that. Titles like Indiana Jones and more had better sales on PS5 than Xbox, highlighting the impact.

Xbox Sales
Xbox hardware sales have significantly declined

For now, Microsoft doesn’t have many Nintendo ports apart from Minecraft, but Fils-Aimé says the company should, in the future, try to expand the Nintendo roster as well. The Switch 2 is a big hit, and they can capitalize on it.

Nonetheless, Xbox is still planning to launch next-gen hardware that is expected to be a hybrid console costing over $1000. So, for casual users, the PS6 would still be an easier choice as it’s rumored to be around $600.
