Advertising consoles as the most powerful of their generation was what appealed to gamers in the past. The original Xbox creator, Seamus Blackley, says it’s time to move on from that notion and focus on what gamers desire now.

He claims that the power race in consoles doesn’t matter anymore. Instead, gamers want what exclusive content these consoles can offer.

Why it matters: The Xbox creator reminisces about a time when consoles prioritizing power was an enormous appeal for gamers. He says that era is long gone since the performance upgrades are minuscule.

PlayStation Xbox Games
Unlike Nintendo, in the last few years, Xbox and PlayStation have reduced their focus on exclusives.

In an interview with VideoGamer, the father of Xbox explains how the massive performance leaps in consoles always impressed him. These ‘leaps’ are now often just a tiny bump nowadays. It is no longer helping Xbox or PlayStation drive more sales like before.

I certainly think that this narrative around [Consoles] being more powerful is not helpful today.

Given that Xbox hardware is already declining and Microsoft is touting the next-generation console to offer the biggest generational leap, he is unsatisfied with the brand’s direction.

how they managed that brand and the story going forward is not my f**king fault. and it’s not, you know, I would not have done things the same way.

At this point, Xbox has almost entirely ditched exclusives since the brand is chasing the multiplatform strategy. It is trying to release its games on as many platforms as possible.

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer
Xbox boss Phil Spencer has defended the multiplatform strategy on multiple occasions.

Conversely, gamers often prefer interesting releases and exclusive content, which is becoming more complex and complicated because of the changing console landscape.
