- Samsung’s Odyssey 3D offers glasses-free 3D gaming with eye-tracking and eye-mapping technology.
- The First Berserker’s impressive visuals highlight its potential, but Samsung needs to build a larger game library to compete.
- The Odyssey 3D success highly depends on game developer support and a 2D-to-3D conversion solution.
Odyssey 3D monitor, a new Samsung product, captured the gaming world’s attention with its ability to deliver 3D visuals without the need for glasses. As a prototype at CES 2024 and then at Gamescom 2024, its eye-tracking and eye-mapping technology surprised people, though it had some problems then.
Now, at CES 2025, the Odyssey 3D monitor is a product that is ready to launch, but only limited games are supported. However, with strong competition from brands like Acer, let’s see if Samsung’s Odyssey 3D monitor really changes gaming or struggles to compete in the market.
Glasses-Free 3D Gaming
The Odyssey 3D monitor is intriguing because it displays 3D visuals without requiring headsets or glasses, eliminating many issues associated with older 3D monitors. Showcased at CES 2025, the improved Odyssey 3D stood out for its capability to sustain the 3D effect seamlessly, even as viewers move their heads in any direction.
While the hardware remains nearly identical to last year’s prototype, a software update has significantly enhanced performance. One game optimized for the Odyssey 3D is The First Berserker, which was showcased at CES 2025. It featured falling snow and flying sparks that added stunning depth, making the Odyssey 3D experience feel lifelike.
Samsung’s glasses-free 3D gaming concept has the potential to stand out in the market. It offers a more comfortable and flexible gaming experience without needing a fixed viewing position to enjoy the 3D visuals.
This advancement in glasses-free 3D gaming makes the Odyssey 3D a compelling option for gamers. However, technological innovation alone is not enough; a sufficient library of compatible games is also essential.
The Content Conundrum: Biggest Challenge
The main problem is that only one game, The First Berserker, is made specifically for this monitor. Samsung has promised that more than 10 games will be compatible with this monitor when it launches in the second quarter of 2025. However, this is not enough to convince gamers to purchase at such a high price point.
In comparison, Acer’s SpatialLabs monitors support hundreds of games after plenty of year’s hard work. So, buying Odyssey 3D instead of SpatialLabs seems impractical at the moment unless Samsung ensures compatibility with other popular AAA games.
The demo of The First Berserker has been widely praised, and none of Acer’s games appears as stunning in 3D as this one does in Odyssey 3D. However, Acer has a significant advantage with its extensive library of supported games, including advanced titles using DirectX12, making it a more attractive option for gamers.
Samsung needs strong partnerships with game developers and significant time to build a large library of supported games, as Acer has done. With consistent effort, gamers might eventually prefer the Odyssey 3D for its advanced technology and exceptional 3D effects.
Will 3D Gaming Become A Reality?
We all know that technology alone is not enough to succeed; a vast library of good games is essential to compete in the market. Currently, Samsung has much work to do to compete with Acer’s SpatialLabs monitors.
Convincing gamers who play games in 3D games to buy a monitor with only a few games available at launch seems nearly impossible. Additionally, asking game developers to spend extra time making their games compatible with the Odyssey 3D could be challenging, especially as more companies create their 3D monitors.
Odyssey 3D is an advanced technology, so its cost will likely rise, making it inaccessible to those unwilling to overspend. It’s unlikely to sell well with only 10 supported games at a high price. However, Samsung has the power to convince game developers to support its monitor, but it’s unclear if they will think it’s worth the effort.
Ultimately, the Odyssey 3D could change gaming with a glasses-free 3D experience. However, its success depends on how quickly Samsung addressed limited game options and high pricing. The Odyssey 3D could be the future of gaming, or it could just be another tech product that fails to meet expectations.
