Fallout TV Show Did Wonders For The Games!

Story Highlights
  • In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of video game adaptations, and it’s quite clear why.
  • These TV adaptations are an amazing marketing tactic for their franchises.
  • Games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout 4 have seen a massive boost in their player count.
  • This trend seems like it is here to stay as more developers have taken an interest in it.

Video game adaptations for TV have become much more prevalent in recent years, and the reasons behind this trend are quite evident. These TV shows have proven invaluable in expanding franchise reach and boosting popularity.

The effectiveness of this tactic becomes clear when the TV show is executed with precision. Countless examples illustrate why video game TV adaptations are emerging as a potent marketing strategy for franchises.

Why it matters: These TV adaptations of video games play a pivotal role in broadening the reach of their respective franchises. They have the power to capture the attention of a wider audience, including individuals who may not have been initially interested in the game, while also catering to the existing fanbase.

Popular Gaming Adaptations

Franchises like The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout, and The Last Of Us have experienced significant growth following the airing of their TV shows. Among these, Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout are the most prominent examples of success.

Many argue that Cyberpunk 2077’s TV show, “Edgerunners,” played a crucial role in giving the game a second chance. The show led to a substantial increase in players, and the subsequent events that unfolded are well-known to all.

Similarly, the Fallout TV show, though relatively new, has already made a significant impact and might have given Fallout 76 a similar jump to Cyberpunk 2077, as evidenced by the game consistently breaking its all-time peak player count on Steam.

However, Fallout 4 has arguably reaped the biggest benefits from the recent popularity of its TV show. The game has surged to over 140,000 concurrent players on Steam in the past 24 hours.

Similarly, Fallout: New Vegas has experienced a revival, breaking its all-time peak player count. The success of the Fallout TV show has been so remarkable that a second season has already been announced, underlining its popularity and impact on the franchise.

Likewise, The Last Of Us experienced a significant surge in player numbers following the success of its TV show.

Movies Are Also Doing Wonders For Games

However, it’s not just TV shows but also movies that have played a crucial role in the success of gaming franchises. Films like Sonic, Detective Pikachu, and Mario have performed exceptionally well, effectively driving traffic to the corresponding games and expanding the overall reach of these franchises.

I think this trend is only gaining momentum, with more developers turning to TV shows and movies to enhance the popularity of their games. Sony, in particular, is making a significant push in this direction, as evidenced by its announcement in April 2023 that it was working on 10 TV shows and movies.

One of the 10 projects is confirmed to be a God of War TV Show. Furthermore, HBO Max is reportedly working on a Hogwarts Legacy TV Show following its worldwide success.

A Hogwarts Legacy Sequel Could Benefit From A TV or Film Adaptation

The upcoming years look promising, with a wealth of video game TV shows and movies on the horizon, which I’m eagerly anticipating. This approach has shown great success, and I can see many more developers jumping on this train.

Take-Two has shown less interest, citing the challenges of breaking into the film industry. However, given the recent triumphs of TV shows based on popular titles, it wouldn’t be surprising if they reconsider this decision.

A Red Dead Redemption TV show could undoubtedly achieve remarkable success if it mirrors the quality and execution of Rockstar’s narrative. While I’m hopeful for such a future, it appears to be a distant possibility at the moment.
