Perfect Dark And Its Studio The Initiative Got Shut Down Earlier This Year!

Story Highlight
  • Take-Two has hired the Perfect Dark head and director to start a new studio under 2K Games.
  • Take-Two initially tried to save the Perfect Dark reboot, but the deal broke apart at the last minute.
  • The game was canceled earlier this year by Xbox, and The Initiative studio was dissolved as part of the layoffs.

Among many other canceled or shelved games, the Perfect Dark reboot was shaping up to be one of Xbox’s biggest endeavors this year. The entry met a grim fate, and its studio, The Initiative, was closed as part of Microsoft’s ongoing layoffs.

Therefore, the whole team was dissolved after the project was scrapped. Now, Take-Two is hiring Perfect Dark head Darrell Gallagher and director Brian Horton to start a new studio within the 2K Games umbrella.

Why it matters: The Perfect Dark studio head and director might develop new gaming IPs or lead the next installments in existing 2K franchises. Gamers are excited to learn more about the new studio.

Take-Two Hires Perfect Dark Studio Head
Jason Schreier says Take-Two hired the Perfect Dark head to launch a new studio under 2K Games.

This tidbit comes from the reputable insider Jason Schreier on Bluesky, who clarifies this new development after Take-Two almost saved the project earlier this year.

As per LinkedIn profiles, Darrel is joining as SVP, Studio Head of the new company, while Brian will be the VP, Head of Creative. The new studio will be working on an ‘ambitious’ unannounced project.

I’m excited to share that I will be joining 2K as SVP, Studio Head, where I’ll be building a new studio and leading an ambitious opportunity unlike anything I’ve taken on before.

-Darrel Gallagher, Studio Head.

Not many details are known about the new studio yet, as 2K has not officially announced it. It’s unclear whether the rest of the Perfect Dark team is making a comeback or the studio is only employing the two named executives.

Perfect Dark
The Perfect Dark reboot would have revitalized the franchise with modern mechanics.

For those not in the know, Perfect Dark allegedly needed another $80 to $90 million, which was about 30% of a typical AAA production. So, the deal collapsed right when Crystal Dynamics was close to moving the reboot to Take-Two.
