Making Safe Bets Is A Death Sentence As Gamers Want New Experiences, Says Dev

Devs Know Exactly What Gamers Want!

Story Highlight
  • The developer behind Rematch states that players want innovation, and playing it safe is a death sentence.
  • This is why the team began working on Rematch before Sifu’s release.
  • Sloclap states that studios should not let the success of a single title dictate their next move.

The gaming industry increasingly favors innovation today after opting to stick with tried-and-true game design over the past few years. With small studios like Sandfall Interactive producing major hits like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the industry has realized the need to move away from safe bets.

Another such game has recently created a lot of buzz in the market, and the creative director of the project believes new and original experiences are key to growth for the industry.

Why it matters: Each new gaming release is riskier than the last, so companies can sometimes play it too safe. However, innovation is still a key component of the gaming industry.

Rematch
Rematch Has Reached 3 Million Players Already

Speaking to Edge, Pierre Tarno, creative director at Sloclap Studio, discussed the team’s latest release.

For context, this is the same studio that brought interesting games like Sifu and Absolver to fans of mixed martial arts, highlighting a distinct take on close-quarters combat. The studio’s latest release, however, is Rematch, an arcade football game.

Following the success of this release, Pierre Tarno discussed the thought process behind trying something so different. As per the director, Rematch was already in development before Sifu’s release.

He believes that studios should always be willing to try different things and never let the success of a project dictate their next move. According to his statement, playing it safe could be a death sentence for a studio.

Chasing safe bets is a death sentence. I think gamers are on the lookout for new, original experiences.

Perhaps this approach is exactly why Rematch is so successful. Although the game has competition from the likes of FIFA, it taps into the more arcade style of football that has been missing from the industry for quite a few years.

It’s also clear that Sloclap poured a lot of passion into the project.

Indie Games Feat
Smaller Games Are Doing Better Than Ever

Of course, various other developers have adopted the same approach recently. Perhaps this is why many believe the indie/AA gaming scene will eventually outgrow AAA releases that are based on a very formulaic approach.
