- The PlayStation 5 Pro reveal has faced much backlash, but it could also be the perfect opportunity for Nintendo to officially unveil the Switch 2.
- After the PlayStation 5 Pro’s price, Nintendo can now justify the leaked $499 price for Switch 2, which offers substantial improvements.
- Nintendo could also potentially be a direct competitor to Xbox and PlayStation since reports claim Switch 2 to get day one AAA releases.
The current generation of consoles has been traditionally different, with Xbox seemingly hanging the gloves for now and Sony being the only company to announce a mid-gen refresh for PlayStation this time.
That said, the PlayStation 5 Pro reveal hasn’t exactly been smooth. Its $700 price tag goes up to $900 for a disc drive, tax, and stand. So, this upgrade isn’t even that substantial for such a price hike.
PlayStation 5 Pro has been receiving a lot of backlash, and rightfully so. Conversely, I believe this situation can benefit Nintendo, which could officially announce Switch 2. A Switch 2 reveal would generally receive a better overall reception and scrape all the attention to itself.
Why It Matters: With Sony setting the bar low for gamers, Nintendo has the perfect opportunity to seize all the positive reception via Nintendo Switch 2, considering the console is decent enough in terms of hardware and price.
Switch 2’s Leaked Price Can Now Be Justified
Nintendo has always been known for making affordable handheld consoles that prioritize accessibility and gaming on the go to compensate for the lack of hardware power. For reference, the Nintendo Switch was launched for just $300, while the Lite variant cost only $200.
With inflation and the increasing demand for video games over the years, the next generation of Switch is expected to pack a punch. This also means that the successor will cost more, considering the above-mentioned factors.
Previously, analysts predicted that Switch 2 would cost around $500, a considerable price rise. Leaks indicate that the handheld console will feature 12GB of RAM and target 4 TFLOPs, offering 8 times the performance of its predecessor.
At least Nintendo can justify the price for the leaked Switch 2 price, which will last a whole generation, in contrast to the PlayStation 5 Pro, which isn’t even a huge upgrade from its base mode.
Switch 2 Could Give PlayStation Competition
I agree that Nintendo isn’t a direct competitor to the PlayStation, but the gaming landscape is rapidly shifting. Hardware is advancing so fast despite not being feasible for consumers and their wallets, hence the price hikes.
While major corporations are pushing cloud gaming, I’d argue that it’s still not feasible in 2024. Handheld consoles will get a second wind before we see cloud gaming mainstreamed.
Switch 2 will also have the advantage of reportedly having day-one AAA releases. Nintendo will still retain most of its focus on making mobile titles such as Zelda and Mario games for the console. However, I believe they will deliver a much more balanced platform this time.
This will directly compete with the PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Sure, Nintendo ports won’t be on the same level as the others, but nonetheless, it would still be an impressive feat.
With a decent price tag and a much more AAA title-supported emphasis on the Switch 2 console, Nintendo can deliver one of its best consoles ever. It will sound much more appealable to gamers looking for a hybrid between AAA and casual gaming experience.
This all depends on Nintendo’s ability to capitalize on this moment. A good announcement can convince gamers to choose them over the PlayStation 5 Pro since the console is still a mid-gen refresh and not a new console entirely.
I hope the Switch 2 reveal isn’t as disastrous as the PlayStation 5 Pro. As the CEO mentioned earlier this year, we can expect an announcement soon enough.
