As Users Continue Reporting PS5 Liquid Metal Issue, Dev Warns It Could Kill Consoles In A Couple Of Years

Flashback To Xbox 360's Red Ring Of Death!

Story Highlight
  • Path of Titans players have reported PS5 consoles overheating and shutting down, which resulted from Liquid Metal issues.
  • Early PS5 models are most prone to this issue, with the vertical position causing Liquid Metal to drip on one side.
  • The dev warns that this issue could cause the console to fail within a couple of years.

While Sony has consistently worked on improving the PS5 console design, the earlier models came with a major flaw. Being the first Sony console to use Liquid Metal, the new custom cooling method was brilliant on paper, but Sony failed to foresee the problems it could bring later on.

Over time, the Liquid Metal can dry out, causing dry spots on the APU and leading to overheating, which may result in the console being shut down. The problem remains evident to date, and as users continue to report such issues, one dev warns that it could render the consoles unusable within a couple of years.

Why it matters: While not as serious as Xbox 360’s Red Ring of Death, the PS5’s design flaw could kill the consoles. It’s important to raise awareness among users to stay vigilant about this issue.

In the latest video by Moore’s Law is Dead, Path of Titans studio Aldron Games’ founder, Matthew Cassells, talked about the rise in recent reports contributing to the PS5 being shut down due to the Liquid Metal issue.

According to him, 2-3% of Path of Titans players on the PS5 reported this issue. Initially, the issue was difficult to identify because the PS5 couldn’t track GPU and CPU temperatures through software.

The Liquid Metal issue is prevalent in older PS5 consoles, while newer PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro models have been released with updated designs to address this issue.

PS5 Has Finally Overtaken PS4 In Monthly Users

Cassells has suggested that Sony establish a free repair service for affected users to address the Liquid Metal issues. Such a program will cost Sony a pretty penny because almost every initial PS5 model was flawed.

Still, if the concern is not addressed, Cassells believe that many consoles will die in a couple years of time.

To avoid liquid metal leaks, early PS5 units shouldn’t be used vertically. Users are also advised to replace the liquid metal after a few years or if heat or shutdown problems arise.
