Older Games Can Still Prove To Be Incredible Experiences In 2024

Expert Verified By

Don't underestimate older games! Where new games often end up disappointing, these classic gems still have a lot to offer.

Story Highlight
  • There are tons of older games that newcomers should try out.
  • I think old iconic releases can stand their ground against most of the industry’s current output.
  • The likes of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Red Dead Revolver, and more are still incredible.

There are tons of new games available to play, but sometimes you just can’t decide what to pick. Perhaps you’re burned out on the repetitive open-worlds of modern AAA titles, or you just don’t have the time to play lengthy RPGs that have become the norm.

In my opinion, the solution lies in revisiting older classics that can still blow your mind. This is exactly what I did this year, and it amazed me how well these older gems still perform in a year like 2024.

Why it matters: Many old classics have been forgotten, but they are still better than most other titles coming out today.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance Still Shines In The Character Action Genre

I played Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance not too long ago, and it would be completely fair to say that the experience blew my mind. This game holds a special place in my heart, and I can’t understand why it doesn’t get more recognition. If you are a fan of action games and want non-stop action, then this is what you are looking for.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is not like your average Metal Gear entry, which makes it special. The soundtracks, boss fights, and combat mechanics, practically everything is perfect here. This game was released over a decade ago, and I would still choose it over most of today’s half-baked releases.

Pokemon Fire Red & Emerald

Pokemon Emerald and Fire Red Versions Are Special To Me

If, as a child, you haven’t played Pokemon games on Gameboy Advance, then what were you doing with your childhood? I still remember the day I played my first Pokemon game. Even in an era dominated by next-gen graphics and unrealistic expectations, I would probably enjoy the Pokemon Fire Red and Emerald Versions more.

Even if you missed out on this experience as a child, it’s never too late. I can confidently recommend picking up any of these Pokemon titles in 2024.

Red Dead Revolver

Red Dead Revolver Is Very Underrated

If you are a Red Dead fan and haven’t played Red Dead Revolver, then are you really a fan? Many aren’t even aware of this game, and that should be considered a crime. This is where the legendary Red Dead series began.

The famous Dead Eye feature also debuted in this very entry. In my opinion, Red Dead Revolver features the best gameplay of the whole franchise, and if you liked Arthur Morgan’s gut-punching story, you owe it to yourself to play through Red Dead Revolver.

You will probably thank me once you realize what an unforgettable experience Red Dead Revolver provides.

Half-Life

Half-Life
Half-Life Is Still A Masterpiece

Half-Life was released well over two decades ago, and it still holds its own against many next-gen AAA titles. Valve’s story-telling was in a league of its own at the time, and while Half-Life isn’t exactly underrated, the modern gaming audience may not know about its excellence.

There is also a sequel, but let me warn you: after playing both games, you will yearn for another one. Fortunately, Half-Life 3 may just be in the works.

Instead of playing the same live service games over and over again, I think it is better to try out different genres every now and then. Millions are engaged in the live genre on a daily basis, so it may not be a bad idea to break away from the same formula.

In my opinion, older games still punch above their weight. The likes of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, in particular, shine on modern hardware. Emulation also makes older classics appear much better than on the original hardware.

There are tons of other classics, like Deux Ex, Diablo 2, System Shock 2, Doom, and Quake, that you can still enjoy in 2024. So, if you’re confused about your next playthrough, kick back and take a trip down memory lane for a few classic experiences.
