Classic Games Like UMK3 And Shaolin Monks Will Return!

Story Highlight
  • Ed Boon is teasing Mortal Kombat remasters for the future.
  • The series creator implies that remasters are a question of when and not if.
  • Games like Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Shaolin Monks, and more could return with modern technology.

Mortal Kombat has existed for over thirty years and continues to be essential to the fighting games genre. The series’ latest entry, Mortal Kombat 1, quickly became yet another hit, and NetherRealm Studios is currently focused on supporting the game.

Meanwhile, fan demand for remasters of classic Mortal Kombat games is constantly on the rise. Acknowledging this demand, Ed Boon states that remasters of the older titles are likely to arrive eventually.

Why it matters: This is not the first time Ed Boon has shown interest in revisiting the series’ most iconic entries, giving fans even more hope for returning classics.

Ed Boon was recently present at the Cleveland Gaming Classic convention, and fans asked him about the series’ future. Stating the obvious, he pointed to support for Mortal Kombat 1 but also teased the possibility of future remasters.

Ed Boon named specific games like Shaolin Monks and Deception as key parts of the IP’s legacy, expressing interest in revisiting these classics with modern technology.

I would love it if we could revisit some of those moments with the latest technology. Remasters, another action-adventure game, there’s great opportunities for that.

He then named Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 as specific games that NetherRealm Studios would be ecstatic to revisit with modern technology. The latter, in particular, remains a fan-favorite to this day.

As per the series creator, these games being brought back is basically inevitable at this point.

One day the stars are going to align and we’re going to make that happen.

In terms of what games could return, the original title, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Mortal Kombat 9 seem like the obvious picks. NetherRealm could also revisit any of the entries from the 3D era since fans continue to hold them in high regard to this day.
