Securing The Future Of Game Preservation!

Story Highlight
  • Microsoft is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to help with emulation for running legacy Xbox games across all platforms.
  • This is a huge step for game preservation.
  • The role would be part of a huge impact that would combine the Xbox and Windows gaming ecosystem.

Xbox has changed much of its strategy over the past year, aiming less towards competition and more towards accessibility and reaching new audiences.

Their latest attempt is now also another step in the multiplatform strategy, but at the same time, securing the future of game preservation. Microsoft is currently looking for a Principal Software Engineer to help develop emulation technology that would help run legacy Xbox games on any device.

Why it matters: Game Preservation has become an increasing concern in the gaming industry ever since the digital push became more prominent. This new emulation technology would ensure that these games are still playable for generations to come on any device.

The job description reads that the said employee will implement the Xbox Backwards Compatibility security system to protect game assets, but also improve the experience for the customers at the same time.

Furthermore, this opportunity is just a starter for the more broader impact across the Xbox and Windows ecosystem. The gaming giant previously mentioned that it desires to merge the best of both worlds into one, starting with Project Kennan, the first handheld they’re releasing this year.

For their own platform, Microsoft has already been a huge ambassador of backwards compatibility with the Series X|S consoles being able to run most of the past Xbox games, no matter what generation. The consoles can also run the PS2 emulation software, but that requires a workaround.

Combining their multiplatform strategy, older Xbox games would now be accessible to all players. This means that titles that were previously exclusive to Xbox will be playable in the future on all devices.

The company’s previous generative AI technology, dubbed “Muse” could potentially also play a huge role in this regard, as said by Phil Spencer himself.
