Expect More Hits From Korea In The Future!

Story Highlight
  • Recent releases from Korean developers include Lies of P and Stellar Blade.
  • Following the success of these titles, the Korean government is now looking to emphasize console gaming for the next five years.
  • This country has the fourth biggest gaming industry, but consoles are not currently a major part of it.

Korean developers have been phenomenal recently. With releases like Lies of P and Stellar Blade proving to be huge hits across the globe, the region has proven to be capable of console gaming despite its previous focus on mobile and online gaming.

Following the successful launch of these titles, Korean gaming is set to expand. According to a report, the government wants to focus on console gaming as a key part of its strategy for expansion.

Why it matters: This part of the world has been dominated by mobile and online gaming. The audience has kept teams from taking console and AAA gaming seriously until now.

Lies of P
Lies of P Is Now Considered The Best Souls-like By Many Gamers

The Minister of Culture Jeon Byeong-geuk discussed the gaming sector of Korea in a recent publication from the Korea Times. Speaking about the gaming industry of the country, he said that it had revenue of 22.2 trillion won ($16.04 billion) two years ago, making it the world’s 4th biggest market.

Elaborating further, he stated that Korean developers will now focus more on console gaming over the course of the next five years. He wants to foster a healthy culture of AAA console games by 2028.

This effort will help the country reduce its dependency on online and mobile game platforms. Ultimately, fans should expect even more hits like Stellar Blade and Lies of P from developers.

Since these teams have shown a willingness to partner with both PlayStation and Xbox, future games may continue to use exclusivity as an approach to fund development and get projects up and running.

This may also lead to various teams moving toward subscription services like Game Pass.

Stellar Blade

As for games that are currently in the works, The First Berserker: Khazan looks to be full of potential. Crimson Desert is another title worth keeping an eye on.

The Korean studios have proven to be quite talented, and it seems the ministry is looking to put these talents to good use.

Fans can also expect these games to receive bigger budgets moving forward, potentially allowing developers from the region to match the biggest names of the industry in terms of raw production values.
