PlayStation has become well known as the home to quality single-player exclusive games over the years. This started as early as the PS3 generation with games like Uncharted2, Metal Gear Solid 4, and The Last of Us. Over a decade later, PlayStation is the platform of choice for those looking to immerse themselves in a quality single-player experience.
However, PlayStation doesn’t have big multiplayer franchises. While the competition has games like Halo and Smash Brothers, Sony has never been able to find their big multiplayer game. Though multiplayer components have existed in big PlayStation titles like The Last of Us, God of War Ascension and Uncharted 4, these games are primarily remembered for their single player experiences.
Sony is now more determined than ever to invest in live service games. Not too long a go, Sony acquired Bungie. Bungie is well known for its multiplayer games and this acquisition is part of a massive push towards producing more live service games by Sony. Sony also revealed its intentions to have more than 10 live-action games to break into this market. The recent acquisition of Haven Studios is also part of this push by Sony.

The first person shooter genre is one of the most popular when it comes to multiplayer games. Games like CS GO, Valorant and Call of Duty are among the most played games in the world. Moreover, Guerrilla Games is no stranger to this genre, they are well acquainted with the genre from their work on the Killzone games. If they are indeed working on a multiplayer shooter, Guerrilla Games will be returning to their roots in many ways. The support from the Rainbow Six developers will be the icing on the cake for the game. This could also be Sony’s first step into competitive games if the game delivers the usual quality expected from Sony’s first party titles.
The developers over at Guerrilla games have seen a lot of success recently. After the lukewarm reception of the last Killzone game, Guerrilla games struck gold with Horizon series. With how different Horizon was from their previous works, they have proven to be quite diverse with their skills. Accompanied by the talent that helped Rainbow Six Siege, the new game could just shake the industry and redefine expectations for an online shooter on consoles as Halo once did for Xbox, decades a go.
