Horizon Forbidden West Has Failed To Win A Single Game of The Year Award

No GOTY For Horizon Forbidden West!

PlayStation released two major first-party titles in 2022. God of War Ragnarok saw the most attention, and Horizon Forbidden West was also released earlier this year. Both games received stellar reception, but Horizon Forbidden West has been mostly overshadowed.

According to a report, Elden Ring has won over 5x more Game of The Year Awards than God of War Ragnarok, but Sony’s latest first-party title has managed to take home 26 GOTY awards.

However, the same report also shows that Horizon Forbidden West failed to win a single GOTY title.

Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West expands on the previous title in many ways and has received tons of praise since its release. Everything that fans loved from the original title is still present, but the game has new additions like more areas, enemy variety, and mechanics like gliding for traversal.

The title also impressed critics and fans with its visual fidelity, although Horizon Forbidden West is a cross-gen release. It already looks incredible on base PS4 consoles and uses the extra power of the PS5 to showcase a breathtaking open world without compromising on performance.

Despite the game’s quality, Horizon Forbidden West has not won a Game of The Year award. It was nominated for the award at TGA 2022 but failed to beat the rest of the games.

Horizon Forbidden West was released alongside Elden Ring in 2022. While Guerilla Games did a phenomenal job with the release, Elden Ring became the center of attention, and much of the gaming industry quickly forgot about Horizon.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons behind the lack of GOTY awards. A similar scenario was seen with Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017, released less than a week before The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild.

However, Horizon Forbidden West is not without its accomplishments. The title has been awarded Best Game Graphics of 2022 from Digital Foundry, beating out high-fidelity releases like The Callisto Protocol and PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarok.

Horizon Forbidden West is set to receive a brand new expansion, Burning Shores, on April 19, 2023. The expansion appears to be set in Los Angeles, with the famous ‘Hollywood’ sign appearing in the reveal trailer.

Fans can play the upcoming expansion on PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, PlayStation 4 users will miss out on the expansion as Guerilla Games is focused on realizing a grand vision on PS5 hardware.
