Here’s Why Gaming Laptops Have Got Me Excited For 2024

Gaming Laptops Have Become Really Good!

Story Highlight
  • Gaming laptops have pretty much shattered the performance limitations. They offer reasonably visible desktop-level power with ease of portability.
  • The vapor chamber cooling ensures these laptops stay cool and quiet even in demanding gaming scenarios.
  • The landscape of gaming laptops is about to change in 2024. With the latest technological advancements, laptops are becoming more powerful.

I have been a die-hard PC gamer for years. So, I was captivated by my PC’s raw power and customization and found it a beast. A liquid-cooled Intel Core i7 13700K, with higher overclocking, gives the highest FPS and unmatched performance. But let me be honest with you. It also makes me sit in a fixed place near my desk with a tangled web of wires (I suck at cable management).

However, in 2024, I discovered the changing landscape of gaming laptops. It not only caught my attention but also changed the way I game. Here’s how.

Adventurous Liberation From The Desk

The first revelation? Portability. Gone are the days of envying friends who could game on the go. I now enjoy gaming liberation with my AMD Ryzen 9 8950HX laptop. This rig is always by my side, whether crashing at a friend’s place for a LAN party or a gaming session during the class break (don’t judge!).

Versatility Beyond The Battlefield

The versatility extends beyond just a location. My gaming laptop seamlessly integrates into my busy schedule. I can edit videos, answer emails, increase productive hours, and have 120+ FPS in Cyberpunk 2077. Honorable mention to Nvidia RTX 4080. Speaking of the 4080, here is the comparison graph of some of the latest graphic cards regarding their average FPS in the same title.

When Do Laptops Rival PCs?

But wait, there’s more. Is performance a deal-breaker for laptops? I don’t remember the bygone era. Thanks to advancements like next-gen processors like the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D and high-end graphics cards like the RTX Super series. The performance gap between desktops and laptops has relatively narrowed compared to what was offered in previous years.

However, a laptop with the same hardware can’t beat the performance of its PC counterpart. For example, the MSI Titan 18 HX, released in 2024, has an Intel Core i9 14900HX and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 16GB. It costs around $5,449 on Amazon. On the other hand, we recently built a PC with an Intel Core i9 14900K and GeForce RTX 4090 24GB. The entire rig is under $5,000. The mobile version is also outpaced by the RTX 4080. So, performance-wise, the PC always gives the best value.

The Cooling Revolution

Let me tell you the real game changer—the cooling solutions. As you already know, a PC has a larger area in its chassis to breathe. In comparison, laptops are very compact and hence need space for cooling. Due to this factor, laptops must be plugged in for a long gaming session, producing more heat.

Vapor Chambers

Technologies like liquid thermal compounds and Vapor Chamber Cooling have transformed laptops into chilled beasts. These chambers use a large flat heat pipe to spread heat significantly efficiently, with no more throttling or performance dips. It is like having a mini it conditioner built into your machine, with a pure gaming experience. Even in the most demanding scenarios, it keeps things cool and quiet.

Gaming Laptops Have High Premium

Yes, gaming laptops typically come with a premium price tag. This premium buys you freedom and versatility. While it is to be noted that gaming laptops can’t beat desktops, a laptop offers more. First, you don’t need separate peripherals like a keyboard, mouse, etc.

The latest technology is the second and most exciting for me regarding laptops in 2024. For instance, let’s talk about Intel’s 15th generation series, expected to be released in the last quarter of 2024. This Arrow Lake architecture comes with a mobile variant, too. It features a new LGA 1851 socket with no hyperthreading, a thinner size, and more Artificial Intelligence features. I hope the newer generation laptops will significantly surpass the older PC builds.

A Calculated Investment

Given the performance and the convenience, it is really hard to not be excited about gaming laptops. They have seen massive growth over the past years both in terms of performance, extra features, and just overall flair. As such, the gaming laptops of 2024 are far from being a compromise.
