From PS4 To PS5 - GTA 6 Has Come A Long Way!

Story Highlight
  • GTA 6 title IDs spotted on PlayStation suggest the game had a PS4 version at some point.
  • This version likely existed in the very early stages of development, potentially due to a lack of PS5 development kits from Sony.
  • GTA 6 is currently scheduled to launch for the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X.

GTA 6 is officially less than 10 months away, and marketing for the title is expected to kick off very soon. Recently, the game’s title IDs were also spotted on the PlayStation Store backend, suggesting that pre-orders will be opened up soon.

As the gaming community eagerly awaits the release of GTA 6, many are curious about what new information Rockstar Games will share. While fresh details about the new game are slowly coming out, a large number of players are also paying close attention to any new GTA 5 updates. This shows how the studio is working to keep its current, popular game exciting while also getting ready for the next big release in the series.

Why it matters: In the past, Rockstar launched at least two GTA games per console, but this trend changed with the PS4. The new finding suggests this trend could have stayed the same.

Rockstar Is Skipping PC At Launch

Following the game’s title IDs appearing on PlayStation, a glitch allowed gamers to showcase GTA 6 among their recently played titles on the platform.

As shared on Twitter by Amethyst, the IDs on PlayStation actually point to a PS4 version instead of a native PS5 title, hinting that a PS4 version of GTA 6 exists in some form on the PlayStation Store’s backend.

Does this mean that Rockstar will launch its upcoming title on the PS4? Probably not. However, it does suggest that GTA 6 may have been in the works for the PS4 at some point.

This is interesting since the game’s full development accelerated after the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, meaning Rockstar may not have had PS5 development kits at the time.

More importantly, GTA 6 was in early production even before Red Dead Redemption 2’s release, so the fact that it started development on the PS4 does add up. However, the game has likely evolved so much since then that the mysterious PS4 version of GTA 6 might not even look remotely similar to what fans have seen in the recent trailers.

Rockstar Is Eyeing A PS5/Xbox Series S|X Launch For November

As it stands, the game is shaping up to be one of the current generation’s most ambitious productions to date, so a PS4 port is out of the question. In fact, the title is unlikely to even run at 60FPS on the PS5, leaving the PS4 completely out of luck in such a scenario.
