GTA 5 Can't Be Stopped!

GTA 5 has shown no signs of stopping since its first release in 2013. The latest GTA title has seen multiple releases on various console generations and continues to enjoy additional updates for its online component.

While its success is no mystery, the game has achieved a new milestone. Take-Two’s latest earnings report confirmed that GTA 5 has now sold over 180 million units.

Why it matters: GTA 5 has broken all records for the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The franchise was already popular before the latest installment, but the 2013 release took it to new heights.

Last quarter, GTA 5 was confirmed to have sold over 175 million units. As such, another 5 million copies have been sold in just a few months.

The latest report also brings the total franchise sales to over 400 million units. Despite classic titles like GTA San Andreas and GTA Vice City, GTA 5 has been the most significant contributor to this milestone.

Recently, Rockstar Games released the ray tracing update for the game. This enabled current-gen features for the nearly decade-old game, incentivizing players to try the PS5 and Xbox Series X console versions.

The next Grand Theft Auto is currently in development, with a series of leaks last year showing players a small glimpse at the game. While a release date is not known, many are expecting to learn more in 2023 or 2024.

Rockstar Games appears to be more ambitious than ever with the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but it will certainly be challenging to measure up to the success of GTA 5.
