- Witcher 4 is expected to introduce Ciri as the lead protagonist, with CDPR planning a whole trilogy for the female Witcher.
- Geralt is still expected to be involved in future entries and could potentially serve as Ciri’s teacher, similar to Vesemir.
- Geralt is also teased as a playable character, and even if the reports are false, fans can be expected to replay as the White Wolf in the remake of the original Witcher game.
It’s been a decade since Geralt of Rivia’s story was concluded with Witcher 3, and the franchise has been on hiatus since then. While CD Projekt Red was busy working on Cyberpunk 2077, they’re now fully focused on Witcher 4, which will spark a new trilogy with Ciri as its lead protagonist.
Ciri’s lead role has led to controversy, mainly because fans of the series wanted to see more of Geralt of Rivia. However, that possibility still isn’t out of the question, and fans can expect to see more of their beloved Butcher of Blaviken with the fourth entry.
While the White Wolf may not be taking a lead role anymore, he is expected to guide Ciri, something he has been doing for a while. Geralt has already been a father role model for Ciri, so it’s only right that he fills Vesemir’s shoes after his demise.
Why It Matters: Ciri taking on the protagonist role has caused much outrage and displeasure among Witcher fans. They think that the White Wolf would be sidetracked because of the female Witcher, but he is still heavily featured in the game and will contribute to the next game’s narrative.
Being A Witcher, Ciri Needs Geralt More Than She Knows
The Witcher lore states that only boys can undergo the Witcher mutation through the Trial of Grasses, and they’re required to be quite young. However, The Witcher 4’s trailer shows Ciri to be a proper Witcher, contradicting the earlier lore, evidenced by her cat-like eyes and usage of Witcher potions.
It would’ve been around a century since the last Witcher was created before the destruction of Kaer Morhen. Vesemir, being the oldest Witcher in the third entry, was killed by the Wild Hunt while protecting the princess of Cintra.
Witcher 4 is speculated to take place a few years after the events of Witcher 3, with Ciri now being a full-grown adult but still a rookie in her profession. Most of the Witchers have decades of experience traversing around the world and taking upon difficult tasks, and while the princess is talented, she still lacks experience.
Geralt could play a major role here, serving as a father/mentor towards Ciri, much like Vesemir was to him in earlier games. If the canon Witcher 3 ending implies that Geralt ends up with Yennefer, a couple that most people prefer, they both can play an adoptive parent role towards Ciri.
We Might Still Be Able To Play As Geralt
The White Wolf is anticipated to play a major role in the next entry of the series, Witcher 4 could also introduce a co-protagonist, featuring both Geralt and Ciri as leads. Given the series’ history, a proper role transition would feel natural, especially since Witcher 3 didn’t provide enough closure for fully passing the mantle to Ciri.
We already had smaller Ciri playable moments in The Witcher 3, which were enjoyable moments, and CD Projekt Red could give Geralt a similar treatment. After all, I’d really want a proper arc for Geralt tying up with the main game for his proper send-off when Ciri has some character development going forward in her planned trilogy.
Even if he isn’t featured as a playable character, fret not since Geralt’s story doesn’t end here. A remake of the first game is also in development, which will entirely retell Geralt’s earlier adventures as a novice Witcher as the continent falls into turmoil.
