GeForce RTX 5080 Expected To Offer Only 18% Performance Over Its Predecessor

Expert Verified By

The RTX 5080 might be slower than RTX 4090.!

Story Highlight
  • The RTX 5080 shows an insignificant performance gain compared to the RTX 4080 Super, particularly with the new 3x and 4x DLSS 4 Frame Generation.
  • Despite the impressive frame generation results, the RTX 5080 only provides an 18% improvement over the RTX 4080 Super.
  • An engineering sample or beta drivers might not reflect the full potential of the GeForce RTX 5080.

The significant performance gain with DLSS 4 Frame Generation makes the recently released RTX 5080 desktop GPU appear to be a good upgrade over its predecessor.

In early testing done by Digital Foundry, the RTX 5080 gains a significant boost in performance with the new 3x and 4x DLSS 4 Frame Generation

According to DF’s comparison of the two models, the RTX 5080 with DLSS 4 Performance and 4x Frame Generation is 91% faster on average than the GeForce RTX 4080 Super with DLSS 4 Performance and 2x Frame Generation.

While these results seem promising, the performance was only measured using Frame Generation and does not relate to the actual rasterization performance of the GeForce RTX 5080.

Why it matters:  The DLSS 4 Frame Generation boost makes the RTX 5080 an attractive option for gamers. However, a modest 18% performance gain, despite higher power consumption, may not appeal to those focused on raw performance.

A user named Relax on the 3DCenter forum evaluated the 5080’s performance according to the DF video using manual frame counting. The GeForce RTX 4080 was tested in exactly the same scene and sequence.

In the video, a sequence from 7:43 to 8:30 shows the performance gains with DLSS FG compared to native rendering in Cyberpunk 2077, but only relative percentages without FPS information.

Relax claims that at native resolution, the GeForce RTX 5080 is only 18% faster than its predecessor on average. That said, the outcome is surprisingly poor, given that the 5080’s TDP is 12.5% higher at 360W as opposed to 320W.

There is also a probability that an engineering sample with lower frequency was utilized in this instance, which does not fully demonstrate the performance with beta drivers.

As a result, the results may be accurate or inaccurate. In any event, the findings demonstrate the card’s performance as tested by Digital Foundry.
