Doom: The Dark Ages Is ‘Masterfully Optimized’ Even On Mid-Range Hardware, Reveals Analysis

With the launch of Doom: The Dark Ages, most fans were complaining about the title’s high system requirements. It seemed like performance would be a major issue at release, however, detailed analysis shows that the game is quite well optimized. 

Even testing on a mid-range Nvidia RTX 4060 paired with Ryzen 5 3600, the title shows excellent results with exceptionally smooth frame times and a consistent 60 FPS gameplay, which is commendable for a modern release. 

Why it matters: Its predecessor, Doom: Eternal, was exceptionally optimized, but based on the high system requirements, many fans feared that The Dark Ages would face major performance issues. 

Digital Foundry tested Doom: The Dark Ages on an RTX 4060 paired with Ryzen 5 3600 at 1440p with max settings, texture pool set at ‘2048’, and ‘Quality’ DLSS. The result was a smooth gameplay with exceptional fluidity. 

However, you need to optimize the settings a bit despite this. For example, in a certain challenging environment where FPS drops, you can lower the shadow setting to get back to the higher frame rate, which for Doom is essential.

The game is heavy on the VRAM, though. With an 8GB GPU, 2048 is the suggested texture pool, while you can turn it up for more high-end GPUs. However, there isn’t much difference even when the texture quality is dialled to the max. 

The visuals look great in all cases, thanks to the RTGI, and the loading times are almost non-existent. Digital Foundry also claims it is one of the best-optimized games they’ve seen in a while, thanks to no shader compilation in the id Tech engine, compared to Unreal Engine 5.
