Doom The Dark Ages: Frame Rate Fluidity On PS5 Feels Lower Than Xbox Series S

"The overall frame rate fluidity feels a bit lower than the Series S"

Story Highlight
  • Digital Foundry has just recently released an in-depth analysis of Doom: The Dark Ages.
  • The game seems to run better on the Xbox Series consoles than on the PlayStation consoles.
  • Xbox Series X offers better performance than the PS5 Pro, and Oliver said that the PS5’s frame fluidity seems lower than that of the Series S.

Doom: The Dark Ages, one of the games that the fandom is looking forward to the most, will be released in just a couple of days. The game’s review score is pretty good, but not as good as the fans were expecting.

Despite that, the fandom is excited and awaiting the true Doom experience. On PC, it seems to have some performance concerns, but it seems like some consoles have it worse. While the game runs pretty good on each device, it seems like the Xbox devices have the upper hand over the PlayStation ones, even the Series S.

Why it matters: Many developers hate the Xbox Series S because it makes it difficult to optimize games on it. It also doesn’t have that good hardware compared to the base PS5 and Series X. However, despite that, it managed to one-up the base PS5, which is absolutely crazy.

Oliver from Digital Foundry has done an in-depth review of the game on Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro. The latter two consoles don’t seem to run the game at a fixed 60fps, while Xbox Series X managed to do so

PS5 drops frame rates regularly during demanding encounters. Our two stress points in levels 2 and 6, and during some less challenged fights as well. The overall frame rate fluidity is lower than Series X by a good margin and actually feels a bit lower than the Series S.

-Oliver [Digital Foundry]

Oliver has hailed the Series X as the king, even when compared to the recent mid-gen refresh PS5 Pro. However, what’s more surprising is that the frame rate fluidity of the base PS5 feels lower even when compared to the Xbox Series S.

Xbox Series S Offers A Solid Doom: The Dark Ages Experience

Do note that Oliver isn’t saying that the Series S is actually superior to the PlayStation in Doom: The Dark Ages. He is simply stating the fact that frame rate fluidity is better on one console than the other

There are dips in the Series S during the demanding encounters, but the PlayStation 5 seems to have even more.
