Dead Space, directed by Glenn Schofield, remains one of the most captivating horror experiences the gaming industry has to offer.

The same director also released The Callisto Protocol in 2023, and although the game was not nearly as successful, fans were excited to see what he would work on next. Unfortunately, Glenn Schofield seems to be preparing for his exit from gaming.

Why it matters: The industry is slowly losing its top talent, with major developers like Hideo Kojima also hinting at retirement.

In a new post on LinkedIn, the developer discussed his potential next step in the industry. He began by noting that game development is undergoing a challenging situation, something that impacts all developers industry-wide.

Game industry it’s tough out there.

Over the last eight months or so, the Dead Space creator worked on a new horror project with his daughter. The developer assembled a team and ultimately settled on a prototype that received positive feedback in initial meetings, but the budget became a point of contention.

Although Glenn Schofield targetted a budget of $17 million, interested parties hoped to bring the budget down to $10 million. However, it seems this figure has dwindled further to about $5 million over the last few months.

Due to these circumstances, the Dead Space director is no longer working on his daughter’s project. In fact, he states that he may have directed his last game with The Callisto Protocol.

Maybe I’ve directed my last game. Who knows?

Glenn Schofield also revealed that his daughter was laid off from Striking Distance Studios as part of the job cuts that followed the release of The Callisto Protocol.

Unfortunately, layoffs have become increasingly common in the industry today, with thousands of jobs lost this month alone. As sad as it may be, Glenn Schofield has made a very valid point about the current state of gaming.
