The Dark Souls franchise has been a game-changer in the industry. With deep lore, intricate level design, and well-designed bosses, FromSoftware has inspired a completely new genre after the series.
While FromSoftware is currently busy with Armored Core 6 and Elden Ring DLC content, a source suggests that Netflix has begun the development of a Dark Souls anime adaptation.
Why it matters: Gaming adaptations have found incredible success over the last few years. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners from Netflix has also shown the potential of anime adaptations for gaming IPs.
As reported by GiantFreakingRobot, Netflix is working on an anime version of Dark Souls.
Their source does not elaborate much about the anime, leaving questions about FromSoftware’s involvement in the project. However, it confirms that the anime is likely to follow the events of the first game.
This would mean that iconic locations like Anor Londo and Firelink Shrine are expected to make an appearance. Fans can also look forward to iconic characters like Gwyn and Artorias in the anime.
Previously, Netflix has done an exceptional job with anime adaptations. Following Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the game reached its all-time concurrent peak, and the anime was among the biggest reasons for its resurgence.
Since the first Dark Souls is non-linear and delivers a somewhat different experience for each player based on playstyle and approach, an anime adaptation may be more challenging than previous works from Netflix.
However, the company’s recent work has done nothing but inspire confidence. While a release date has not been provided, an official announcement could be made in the next few months.
