Turn-based genre is often labelled as dead in the gaming industry, as modern gamers find it boring and slow-paced. That’s when Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released and changed the whole perspective of the genre.
It is one of the top-rated releases on Metacritic this year, and also the highest-rated PlayStation store game of 2025, beating the likes of Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, and more, making it a solid game of the year contender.
Why it matters: Clair Obscur is topping charts everywhere. Among other PlayStation hits this year, it has managed to come out on top and even recently won multiple awards, including the GOTY at the Thailand Game Show.
Clair Obscur currently stands with the highest overall reviews at 4.9/5. It is closely followed by Death Stranding 2 with 4.88, which, in terms, is followed by Ghost of Yotei at 4.82. The top 3 are followed by Split Fiction, Sword of the Sea, and Shinobi.
This shows how big a global phenomenon Sandfall’s title has been. It has only managed to revive an otherwise dead genre, but has also given it a whole new definition, and fans praise it for that in their reviews.
Overall, it is the highest-rated 2025 release and was recently beaten by Hades 2 to the throne, another excellent title. But this shows how small to medium budget games have been a highlight of the year.
It’s a proof that developers don’t need to add huge open worlds or anything too flashy to the games. The games just need to have a good story with layered characters and well-designed gameplay, and the players will take them on top.
