Call of Duty 2024 Codenamed Black Ops 6; Set In Gulf War

Features Old Maps From Black Ops Series!

Story Highlights
  • Treyarch is working on the next Call of Duty game, which will be released in 2024.
  • The studio is returning to the Black Ops IP, taking the franchise to the Gulf War of the early 90s.
  • Codenamed Black Ops 6, this game will bring back round-based zombies and various classic multiplayer maps.

There are few things as consistent as Call of Duty in life. While there is no telling what may happen in a new year, a new Call of Duty entry is certainly guaranteed. In keeping with this tradition, Activision is reportedly planning a Black Ops game for 2024.

Led by Treyarch, this entry is currently codenamed Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Why it matters: Call of Duty is typically the best-selling franchise in the first-person shooter genre year after year. Therefore, each new release is a huge deal for the gaming industry.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

According to Jez Corden from Windows Central, sources have confirmed that Treyarch is continuing the tradition of experimenting with older settings for its Black Ops franchise.

A previous leak pointed to the Black Ops title being set during the Gulf War of the early 90s, and this report corroborates the information. Additionally, Treyarch may return to a numbered title for the Black Ops IP.

It is said that the campaign will focus on offering multiple perspectives of this conflict for a nuanced take instead of a one-sided overview. As expected, a more traditional zombie mode will also return next year.

While the zombie mode has been through multiple iterations in the past, fans have enjoyed Treyarch’s classic round-based approach the best. Therefore, this is the route Activision and Treyarch are taking for Call of Duty 2024.

Black Ops 6 is also expected to feature returning maps. Modern Warfare 3 features all maps from an older Call of Duty game, and a previous leak pointed to a similar approach for Call of Duty 2024.

Therefore, it seems Activision will continue to leverage nostalgia and already-established tropes to ensure Call of Duty remains successful.

Call of Duty 2024 Black Ops Gulf War

The decision to revisit older maps is an interesting one. Modern Warfare 3 has received a lot of criticism for its reliance on old content, so Activision may consider dialing back the usage of old content.

However, this is nothing new for the Call of Duty franchise. Since 2018’s Black Ops 4, each new entry has heavily relied on remastered maps for multiplayer.

The biggest takeaway from this report has to be the Gulf War setting. Typically, Black Ops games have always offered Call of Duty’s most creative and thought-provoking campaigns.

Therefore, with a brand new setting like the Gulf War, Black Ops 6 could deliver a much-needed shake-up for this IP’s campaigns.
