Most Expensive Animation Series Ever!

Story Highlight
  • Arcane is the most expensive animated series ever made.
  • Riot spent $250 million on the production and promotion of its 18 episodes.
  • Riot believes the show’s success justifies the significant investment.

Netflix’s Arcane, the hit animated series based on League of Legends, has just become the most expensive animated series ever made. According to Variety, a reported $250 million was spent on production and promotion for its 18 episodes over two seasons.

Why it matters: Recent anime adaptations of video games have been quite successful, with shows like Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Arcane leading the way.

Arcane 0 Million Budget
Arcane’s season 2 is poised to become the biggest animation hit of 2024.

Arcane’s hefty budget has had a big impact on its future. Plans for a five-season story were scaled down, with the series now set to end after its second season.

Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill recognized the project’s high risk but was pleased with the investment. He mentioned that Riot has never followed traditional production timelines, focusing instead on quality and creating a show that truly connects with League of Legends players.

Merrill shared that creating Arcane was a major learning experience. The studio adjusted its goals to focus on quality. Despite the large investment, Merrill believes Arcane’s success proves it was worth it.

Created by Riot Games in collaboration with the French animation studio Fortiche, Arcane quickly became a fan favorite with its compelling narrative. The series earned overwhelmingly positive reviews, including a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Arcane Season 2
Based on the show’s success, Riot is reportedly planning to expand into a larger cinematic universe similar to Marvel’s.

The show also won multiple Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Animated Program. The success has only increased excitement for Arcane’s second season, set to premiere in November 2024.

The first three episodes will be released on November 9, with the next set coming on November 16, and the season finale airing on November 23.
