"Fresh Take on MOBA Games Like Dota 2!"

The steady growth of the gaming industry has attracted many companies. Among others, Amazon has recently begun to expand in the industry, releasing games like New World and publishing the next Tomb Raider release.

Internal Amazon studios are also working on a number of new games in various genres. One such game appears to be part of the MOBA genre, as we have spotted that Amazon Games Montreal is hiring for work on a new MOBA project.

Amazon Games Montreal is a relatively newer studio, established two years ago in March 2021.

At the time of the studio’s establishment, Amazon announced that it would be led by veteran developers who had worked on Rainbow Six Siege, using their experience to create new online multiplayer games for Amazon.

However, it appears the team is pivoting to a different genre of multiplayer games since the job listing for a Game Designer states that the developer will be:

“Participating in the creation of a new intellectual property, a fresh take of the AAA multiplayer online battle arena game(MOBA).”

The genre of MOBA games is currently dominated by League of Legends and Dota 2. Such games attract millions of players daily, making it a lucrative market for Amazon as a new competitor in the gaming industry.

The developer hopes to bring a fresh take on this genre, aiming to innovate and establish a successful multiplayer game for Amazon. Other requirements for the position also point to the use of Unreal Engine.

Unreal Engine 5 is slowly becoming the industry standard, and Amazon Games Montreal will use the engine to bring its upcoming MOBA game to life. The listing asks for:

“Experience with Unreal(Blueprint for prototyping).”

Several other job listings from the studio also require experience with Unreal Engine 4 and 5.

Other job listings include a position for an AI developer, pointing to the use of AI enemies or companions.

Games like Dota 2 and League of Legends also incorporate bots in the gameplay, allowing players to face AI opponents in custom matches to practice and improve their skills in the game.

Therefore, Amazon Games Montreal appears to be working on all of the hallmarks of a modern MOBA in its upcoming title.

While information about a possible setting or style of the game is not found in the job ads, the position for an Animation Artistic Director points to the inclusion of humanoid creatures in the game. One of the qualifications asks for:

“Proficiency in animating bipeds, quadrupeds, and other creatures.”

Previously, Amazon experimented with Crucible, a free online shooter that included elements of the MOBA genre.

This project was unsuccessful, and support was quickly dropped after its release. However, Amazon appears hopeful about another experiment with the genre, using its recently established Montreal studio to lead the development.

It remains to be seen if Amazon can break into this genre of gaming, but the tech giant certainly appears optimistic.

With a new team of veteran developers, fresh ideas, and massive ambitions, the studio hopes to become a force to be reckoned with among MOBA games, possibly competing with the likes of Dota 2 and League of Legends.
