Can We Expect A GTA Online-Like Mode For Cyberpunk Sequel?

Story Highlight
  • CD Projekt Red might have just teased a multiplayer mode for the Cyberpunk sequel.
  • The company is seeking a lead quest programmer with skills in multiplayer network architecture.
  • We can expect the multiplayer mode to be like GTA Online or be limited to a simpler co-op experience.

Many reports over the years have suggested that CD Projekt Red is tinkering with some sort of online mode for Cyberpunk 2. For now at least, fans are exploring ambitious multiplayer mod projects to bring multiplayer to Cyberpunk 2077.

A new report suggests CDPR is hinting at quests designed specifically for multiplayer in Cyberpunk 2. Cheat Happens found this tease in a new job listing seeking a lead quest programmer for the game.

Why it matters: CD Projekt Red always had grand ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise, some of which couldn’t be met. So, an ambitious multiplayer mode could do wonders in the sequel if it’s similar to anything like GTA Online.

CD Projekt Red would prefer the hiree to have knowledge of multiplayer network architecture.

The job listing seeks a developer who has an understanding of ‘multiplayer network architecture and client-server synchronization’ for Cyberpunk 2 quests. Based on this, CDPR could be possibly adding full-fledged multiplayer like GTA Online.

It would also be correct to lean on a simpler co-op mode similar to Borderlands or Baldur’s Gate 3, since the listing specifically teases shared questing, co-op missions, and multiplayer-specific narrative content.

It would be CDPR’s first rodeo with adding multiplayer to any of its large-scale open-world RPGs, but using the more versatile Unreal Engine 5 could make it easier to implement.

For those not in the know, CD Projekt Red co-CEO Adam Badowski also stated in early 2024 that ‘multiplayer elements’ were being considered for the sequel.

And credible Polish analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski recently added that Cyberpunk 2 will launch in Q4 2030 with multiplayer. The inclusion of multiplayer has reportedly bumped its total budget to $400 million. So, we could be in for a treat unless CD Projekt Red changes its plans later.

Do you think CD Projekt Red will bring a multiplayer mode like GTA Online to the Cyberpunk sequel, or are these indicators not enough to draw a conclusion? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
