The Rockstar Alum Is Also Developing An Open-World Comedy Game.

Story Highlight
  • Dan Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar Games, is developing two new games at his media company.
  • The first project is an open-world comedy that will be revealed in the next few months.
  • The second game will be a dystopian sci-fi IP about a rogue AI that gains sentience.

GTA 6 is finally set to launch worldwide next month, and hype for the title is through the roof. Rockstar Games has set lofty standards for the upcoming open-world game, saying that it aims to overdeliver on fan expectations.

While most players expect GTA 6 to be a high-quality product, the upcoming title will be the first game in the storied franchise not involving Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, who left the company in 2020. As it turns out, Houser’s studio is working on a couple of very interesting projects, including one about AI.

Why it matters: Unlike Mindseye, which was an unoptimised mess created by Leslie Benzies to mimic GTA, these projects from Dan Houser sound like original IPs that venture into new pastures instead of rehashing what worked before.

GTA 6 Rockstar Games
GTA 6 will be the first title in the series not involving Dan Houser.

In an interview with Variety, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser has revealed that his media company is working on two new games, and one of these titles will deal with a sentient AI gone rogue. Houser explained that the project will be a dystopian sci-fi title about an AI that discovers sentience after the development of a video game goes wrong.

The other (title) is a dystopian sci-fi about a video game development gone very wrong, and about a rogue AI that discovered sentience.

The AI was made by two people who hated each other, and as a result, it ends up hating itself. The former Rockstar head’s entertainment studio, Absurd Ventures, is developing both projects, with the other one being an open-world comedy.

The GTA alum didn’t give any timeline on the AI title, but did reveal that the open-world game will be showcased in the next few months. According to Dan Houser, the project will lean heavily into the comedy aspect while delving into character memory.

MindsEye, the latest attempt at an open-world title by former Rockstar employees, failed miserably.

Considering how the Rockstar founder was the lead writer on most GTA games, and is being supported by other franchise veterans like Lazlow Jones and Michael Unsworth, these new titles have every chance to perform better than Leslie Benzies’ open-world flop Mindseye.

Do you think the new games developed by Dan Houser will be successful? Are you excited about the interesting premise of both projects? Tell us in the comments below or head to the Tech4Gamers forum for discussion.
