- Rockstar says it was worried Arthur Morgan would feel less exciting after GTA 5 let players switch between three leads.
- However, Arthur Morgan quickly ended up being a fan-favorite character.
- Rockstar’s Rob Nelson says that this happened mainly due to how focused the team was on Arthur’s character arc.
Rockstar Games introduced multiple playable characters in GTA 5, an element that became a selling point of the team’s most successful game to date.
However, this also meant that expectations were higher than ever for Red Dead Redemption 2, and when the team reverted to a single character for the game, it felt nervous about players being disappointed.
Why it matters: Many fans still adore Arthur Morgan’s character, ranking him as not only one of Rockstar Games’ best leads but one of gaming’s best characters in general.

As reported by TroisCouleurs, Rockstar Games reportedly feared that players would find Arthur Morgan boring in Red Dead Redemption 2 after GTA 5 raised expectations with three playable protagonists.
Rockstar North co-lead Rob Nelson said the studio was nervous about moving from GTA 5’s Michael, Franklin, and Trevor to a single playable lead in Red Dead Redemption 2. This is interesting, especially since Arthur is now widely seen as one of Rockstar’s strongest characters.
Going to Red Dead Redemption 2, which was Arthur’s story, we were slightly nervous people were never going to be bored with just one protagonist.
As Rob Nelson puts it, the team’s focus on a singular character ultimately ended up working in its favor. He believes the team really delving deep into Arthur’s character was essential to making the experience as great as it was.

Rob Nelson also noted that many people had questions about multiple playable characters in Red Dead Redemption 2 before the game was released. However, the team was ultimately able to dispel any doubts.
