The Prices Could Get Even Worse!

Story Highlight
  • The US administration is reportedly considering new tariffs on items with semiconductors.
  • The aim is to force companies to develop stuff instead of importing from other countries.
  • This could lead to a further increase in the already skyrocketing prices of gaming hardware.

It is no secret that the gaming market is in a state of turmoil right now. With the AI boom, everything from memory to storage, GPUs, and consoles now costs a fortune, and things might get even worse in the US in the near future.

A new report indicates that the Trump administration is considering new tariffs on semiconductors. Notably, these will also apply to products that utilize them, like RAM, Graphics cards, consoles, and more.

Why it matters: If AI-led inflated prices weren’t already an issue, these new tariffs will make the situation even worse. For context, consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series already cost nearly double their original MSRPs.

Building a new gaming rig is getting expensive by the day, thanks to the ongoing memory shortage.
Gaming might get a lot more expensive with the new reported US tariffs

Politico reports that the US government led by Donald Trump is now considering new tariffs on all electronic items with semiconductors. So, if you were waiting for console prices to come down, that might not happen any time soon.

The purpose behind these new measures is to force companies to manufacture stuff in the US instead of importing it. However, this isn’t as simple as that, as you need massive infrastructure to build such items in bulk.
